As a child, Paul spent his summers in Rossport, Ontario on the sublime shores of Lake Superior. On the last day of school, he and his family (including a host of aunts, uncles and cousins) would hit the highway to make the two-hour trip east from Thunder Bay (then Port Arthur) to join his grandparents in a community that still captures his imagination. Rossport’s harbour is unusual, crammed for miles with islands large and small, flat and protruding. Getting there requires experiencing some of Canada’s most spectacular scenery, and living there – as a child in the 30s, 40s and 50s – launched this artist on his many journeys of discovery.
